PROPER FUELING IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS PROPER TRAINING
When it comes to endurance events you need a proper fueling plan to get you from start to finish in one piece. There are so many brands out there but knowing the principle function of each type of product will help you weed through and come up with a mix that suits you best. There is no such thing as “the best one”, more like, “the best one for you”. Everyone’s body and taste preferences are different. Take gels for example, each brand has its own texture profile and selection of flavors. Another important note is that some flavors will have caffeine, while others will not. Caffeine has its place in everyone’s race but where that place is will be determined by trial and error, or your coach. The simplest way to break this down is that there are products for:
- BEFORE: Pre-race bars, gels, and hydration that prepare your body for the event. Caffeine is not typically used before.
- DURING: Gels, blocks, sodium caps, and hydration that sustain your body throughout the event, replenishing your energy stores and preventing cramping.
- AFTER: Protein and carbohydrate loaded bars and drinks that help your muscles recover from the damage done by your workout/race and better prepares you for the next event.
